Reading Ulysses with my Mom

SIX: MOM'S BIO

SEPTEMBER 7

My bio! Draft #1 edit freely!

When I sat down to write my bio, my first thought was, I've waited too long to do this! Lots of water under the bridge, so I will dabble in the pools that influenced my history as a reader!

My earliest memories were of reading under the bedcovers with a flashlight. Read all the Anne books... Anne of Green Gables, etc. That and The Boxcar Children are two series that come to mind. I can recall loving to go to the library by myself and scanning the shelves for my next read. At University I majored in English and can recall feeling overwhelmed by all the great books out there! I did my BA majoring English... studying summers and evenings... we jokingly called it the 10 year plan. Sometimes it was difficult to get enthused after teaching all day, then bussing to U of M for classes that ran from seven to ten but I did love the whole world of learning! In my teaching career I encouraged my students to read and we often found time for reading during the school day.

When our children were growing up, they were surrounded by books. So happy Kathryn shares this love of literature.

Another influence on my journey has been the numerous bookclubs I have belonged to. Shared many an evening discussing a variety of authors with women who became friends because of our reading connections.

Covid had a huge impact... gone were the bookclub meetings and the trips to the library. Fortunately there was Libby! This online reading service from our provincial library has been a lifesaver!

On the plus side I have access to countless books. Unfortunately it can be a long wait to read new releases or popular authors. I have done alot of light reading!

I think wanting to read Ulysses grew out of a need for that something more!

Once Kathryn got on board I got very excited! I look forward to this "literary" journey!
