Reading Ulysses with my Mom

TWENTY:
12. CYCLOPS (oops)

 OCTOBER 2

So after 12 episodes I am still finding this difficult to follow. Not sure if it would help if I knew more about Greek mythology. Have a smattering of knowledge since I did teach a section on Greek mythology to a grade 9 class... many years ago!

Struggling with another unknown narrator rambling on about events that are unrelated and disjointed. Only unifying factor seems to be thirst for a pint! And word of Dingham's death.

Bloom's presence doesn't seem to add much except to make him the topic of antisemitic statements when he leaves not having shared a drink or bought a round. Another hard to follow 'aside'.

Bloom certainly set himself up with his conversation and by the end of the episode the conversation gets very strange!

Read some of it twice trying to sort out this conversation.... how it degenerated so badly. No success! Where is this going?

Mom.

Mom.

No cheating!

You never emailed me about episode 11—I was all set to reply to you about the musicality in the phrases and say something about the writing inviting a mindfulness of sorts—a focus on the sentence in front of you as the only sentence that matters... but you seem to have breezed right past to episode 12!

You're not allowed to skip anything, even if it is "just" another episode of dudes sitting around talking. ;)

BTW—had to chuckle at your comment on Saturday that I haven't posted anything new on the website for a while. I've been busy behind the scenes with exciting things like improving the website responsiveness, adding Google Analytics, and also setting up a newsletter to let interested folks know when I put up a new post. Oh good grief! It was episode 11 I had most trouble getting my head around! If you weren't investing so much time and effort I may have called it quits. Besides I love this contact!

Will put something together. Your hints about musicality and focusing on each sentence as an entity may help. Will get at it!
